I received an email this morning from GoDaddy Software (where I have a domain name registered) that stated that Verisign was sending out letters to customers to warn them of domain expirations, and charging $20+ more than GoDaddy to re-new the registration.

Your can read the GoDaddy letter here (http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/private_vsrn.asp?isc=&se=%2B&from%5Fapp=). They also provide a link to view the suspicous letter from Verisign. I looked over it, and didn't see a great realevance to the GoDaddy letter. The letter is posted here (http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/private_vsrn.asp?isc=&se=%2B&from%5Fapp=&display=letter)

If I actually get a letter there may be some validity because I don't have any association with Verisign.

This has actually been going on for awhile.

What is happening (it's not a godaddy specific situation) is that verisign and register.com are sending out letter to domains that are about to expire.

The letters make it sound like they are about to lose their domains and they MUST register NOW. They fail to state (clearly) that the letter is advertising and that you do not have to register with verisign or register.com.

The letter is intended to cause the recipient to panic and register thru verisign or register.com - which in the case of our clients - would mean they would be paying about double the registeration fee.

It's really cut-throat marketing. When they started hitting us (I even got them for my domains) we got ALOT of calls from clients wanting to know what the heck was going on and why were they getting these letters. Now, they just throw them away ;)

They are just being proactive in notifying their clients so they don't get tricked.

Go daddy is always good because it is cheap.
