Virtual Host Questions

I have recently recieved an offer from a friend for free space on his virtual host. I was wondering what a virual host is and if it has any advantages or drawbakcs in regards to a '?real host?'?

He may mean "shared hosting" as apposed to "dedicated", all it means is that your friend hasn't rented a dedicated server but has signed up for a hosting plan which his site will be on a server with other users aswell.
