1.Retry the web page by pressing F5, clicking the refresh/reload button, or trying the URL from the address bar again.
2.Check for errors in the URL.
3.Move up one directory level at a time in the URL until you find something.

In my views 404 pages doesn't causes any damage to your website, but if you are having too many 404 error page then it might be the issue, in case of large e-commerce website, so, in situations like this the best option is to re-direct them to the relevant product or category & With time google also De-index the 404 pages.

Objectively speaking, a 404 is not an error. 404 error occurs when a user comes to page which is not exists on your website. The best way to fix this is via .htaccess and redirect users to your custom 404 page or redirect it your sitemap.
