Wow Jason i never thought pagerank was named after Larry. I always thought it was called that 'cause of the PAGE you rank on. Google's algorithm is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. I know one of my buddies, a first time webbie, just created a new website and made the mistake of going to one of those "get 2000 backlinks in 20 minutes" sites. And a few months later it actually boosted his page rank a lot. So who really knows what google is doing.

PageRank assigns a rank or score to every search result. The higher the page's score, the further up the search results list it will appear. Scores are partially determined by the number of other Web pages that link to the target page. Each link is counted as a vote for the target.

I believe PageRank is still being used as a key ranking factor its just the PR is not visually updated so to slow down people creating unnatural links.
