Depends what you want to achieve and how experienced are you with photo editing software. Top quality editing requires great skill. In order to master Photoshop first 6 months in graphic school you learn just basic Photoshop skills to be able to work with it.
So if you are beginner than Picasa will do the job.
Pixelmator is great photo and graphic editing software for Mac. Web page is
http://www.pixelmator.com - price is $ 59. It is widely speculated that Apple will buy this company if ever decides to compete with Photoshop.
Another great Mac photo editing software is Photomatix Pro by HDRsoft. Web page is:

If you need intermediate or professional level than Photoshop is a must. Gimp is free software similar to Photoshop but little more difficult to master.
Try photo editing software online :
Photo editing web sites are mostly operating system agnostic which means they work with any operating system and they are very safe to work with - they have firewalls and scan for viruses so that is not any concern.

Professional photographers use mostly Aperture - that is Mac software and they use almost exclusively Macs. I read somewhere that 90% of top photographers use Aperture.

Adobe has software for professional photographers that works both on Mac and Windows (mac and windows versions) and it is called Lightroom.

Also photo editing is hardware intensive job - it is both memory and processor hog so better have good computer if you want to do it.
