I just wanted to through my two cents in here and reiterate what some of the other folks have said. You can have good graphic design without web design (as it applies to many other fields: print, commercial, advertising, TV, etc.), but you really can't have good web design without at least some consideration of graphic design. While a great deal of good web design revolves around technical aspects (making sure the website is fully functional for both the backend and the enduser), it also needs to be visually appealing in a way that is easy and functional. A good website shouldn't need a tutorial for the average person just to be able to operate all its functions. Think about it like a car: the design of the engine and other technical parts is like web design, the design of the molding, paint job, and other body details is like good graphic design. They go hand-in-hand.
