Image optimization is something about making your image indexable by a search engine. You must give a proper name to your image and every important image must have a meaningful alt tag. Moreover, try to use images which fit it's space exactly as it can save website load time. For instance, don't resize the image of 300x300 pixel to fit into area f 150x150, use lower resolution images whenever required.
