Study shows link between screen time and overweight risk in children

The children were divided into 3 groups according to their consumption of television and computer screens (occasional, average or frequent) and according to their physical activity (occasional, average, frequent).

The researchers also measured the height, weight and waist circumference of these children.

According to the results, published in the journal Scientific Reports , taking into account the parameters of age, ***, origin, sleep and sports activities, researchers have observed that the most fond of television and computer exposed to a higher risk of overweight and abdominal obesity.

This was also true for those who exercised the most.

The team stresses, however, that this does not show any causal link.

" It should be noted that this cross-sectional study does not reveal a causal link: it is possible that overweight children spend more time in front of the screens or that a significant amount of time spent in front of the screen results in overweight ", explains researcher Elina Engberg.

" The study also did not measure the intensity of physical exercise, participants only evaluated the amount of time sport spent in free time, and more research on the combined effects of Physical activity and diet on the weight of the child are necessary .

Screens have become ubiquitous in modern society. These results indicate that the strategies employed to reduce physical inactivity and screen time can help to control childhood obesity and overweight
