Until a couple of years ago, you could add your keywords to a page through a meta tag & those were counted by Google & other search engines. However, this no longer counts towards SEO & search engine bots simply ignore whatever is given in this tag. Now if you want to make your keywords count, make sure to feature them in the content of your site. What is still relevant though, is the meta info which is what you see as your listing on a search engine. So make sure you have your keywords in that. There are many plugins such as yoast seo & all in one seo pack which allows you to easily edit this meta info.
