It is very powerful but its popularity make it very open to attacks bot critique of its speed , search engine optimisation potential , and hacking vulnerabilities. WordPress has addressed a lot of these issues with plugins , which further slow down sites.

If however you have a good knowledge of php coding you could create your own theme or edit the rubbish coding placed in the many of the generic themes.

There are sites and themes out there in wordress that are doing it all right , but thiese are people who bought a premium theme or know what they are doing with php and reconfigured the theme.
