Its a kind of marketing through mobile, I think its effective as long as you know your target customers, because sometimes it can be annoying to your customers, make sure you have good freebies too.

SMS marketing is only useful to send information to local clients. You can also take help of emails as these short messages sometimes do not delivered.

But remember that many countries make an order DND option to consumer, so it will not work for those situation.
