Broken links can be difficult for website visitors, making them unable to access the desire information. If web developers delete a linked page, place a wrong URL in a text link and without change the text link then, a broken link is created. If you will click on the link it displays the error message “Page Not Found”. They can affect your search engine ranking and reduce the Website traffic.

A broken link is a URL that is not linked to a webpage. When you click it, you'll be directed to a 404 error page (Page Not Found) or any similar message along those lines that tells you that the webpage doesn’t exist, no longer active or has been moved.

Broken links negatively impacts user experience and ranking so it’s very important to fix the errors as soon as you find them. Here are some of the free tools you can use to find the broken links - Google Webmasters, brokenlinkcheck and deadlinkchecker.

Hope this helps!

Broken links are links that don’t work. Some of the reasons why links don’t work include:
  • A website is no longer available
  • A webpage was moved without a redirect being added
  • The URL structure of a website was changed

Broken link building is an effective, white-hat, scalable, content-focused link building strategy that builds links through finding broken links, recreating that broken content, and helping webmasters replace broken links with your corrected link.

When web developers delete a linked page, place an incorrect URL in a text link, or change a URL address without correctly updating the URL, a broken link is created. In other words, when searchers (and/or web crawlers) browse through your site and click on the link, they may be directed to a page with a 404 error.
