SEO and SMO both are important from terms of gaining good page rank and traffic. You can't ignore anyone. Only for small time you can choose one for small strategies. As if you have some urgent promotions then you can use SMO. While if you have patience then you have to choose SEO. As For long time process SEO is the best.

When compared with SEO and SMO i think SEO is best. SEO is like huge tree with many branches. There are various SEO methods and techniques to be followed to get better results. The technique i followed is got some best paid SEO service along with my manual SEO works. Both are good, But the SEO is very effective to make up the website in search engine.

You can't compare because each are important on there level but we should know how to use both to get traffic to our site because we are concerned with growth of our business.
If you do both at same time then its very beneficial because we can get traffic from both. So I guess its a good digital marketing strategy to both optimization at same time.
