The rel=canonical element, often called the “canonical link”, is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues. It does this by specifying the “canonical URL”, the “preferred” version of a web page. Using it well improves a site's SEO.

However, sometimes there may be alternate versions of your page URLs that can be listed on search engines - even though they ultimately go to the same page.

Canonical URL is the search engine friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as authoritative. In other words, a canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see.

Canonical Tag is used solve duplicate content issues. Different URLs as same Content means, It is called Duplicate Content Problem. If you 301 redirect Page A to Page B, the User can understand and can visit only Page B. But The Search engine can't, So use Canonical tag and inform search engine to consider Page B Particularly.

It's a good idea to pick one of those URLs as your preferred (canonical) destination, and use 301 redirects to send traffic from the other URLs to your preferred URL. A server-side 301 redirect is the best way to ensure that users and search engines are directed to the correct page.

Thumbs up Canonical:

A canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see. Site owners eliminate self-created duplicate content in the indexing using Canonical in URL.

Examples of Canonical

All of them should redirect to a single URL to stop the crawler believing that they are different from one another.
This is called canonical tag.
