A canonical issue arises when 301 blows are not properly in place. Meaning that your website can be utilized by google from several different URLs. Meaning that google can then potentially index your website under different URLs, meaning that it will look like a website of copied content.

Canonical url is most important part of seo, every website require to canonical url reference for search engine, If this reference is not available than after sometime you will face the problem of duplicate content like www. & without www. domain name is consider as a different domain name for search engine.
