Backlinks are not as important as they used to be due to the emphasis that was put on them. Onsite content and internal links are definitely more important then in the past.

Link building is the off page optimization technique in SEO and according to the new strategy, it is not important that more number of back links in less number of sites; it is important that even a few no of back links in more number of high PR sites.
