Sitemaps make navigating your site easier and having an updated sitemap on your site is good both for your users and for search engines. Sitemaps are an important way of communication with search engines.

Google introduced Google Sitemaps so web developers can publish lists of links from across their sites. The basic premise is that some sites have a large number of dynamic pages that are only available through the use of forms and user entries. The Sitemap files contains URLs to these pages so that web crawlers can find them. Bing, Google, Yahoo and Ask now jointly support the Sitemaps protocol.

An XML sitemap creates a hierarchy of your site for bots and search engines to follow. It ensures that the spiders can easily reach all parts of your website and indexes your pages quickly. XML sitemaps are imperative to the success of SEO--period. XML sitemaps are a little different from HTML sitemaps, because they are intended for search engines and spiders not website visitors. XML sitemaps can be visible with any web browser, but their main function is to provide the URLs of a website to search engines. They even show data on how often a page has been changed compared to other URLs on the same site.

Using a sitemap got many benefits. It not only provides easier navigation, but also helps in rendering better visibility to the search engines. Sitemaps deliver the opportunities to inform the search engines about any of the changes that has been made on your website.
