Cereals in baby food

Cereals are among the first foods introduced during food diversification. They have many nutritional benefits for the child. How to select and prepare? Our advices.

baby food diversification begins with plant foods: vegetables of first, then fruit and finally cereals. However, the cereals rich in complex carbohydrates, may be introduced early in the bottle in the evening or morning, to extend the baby's satiety of a meal to another.

At what age is introduced this item?

Ideally introducing cereal at 6 months and not before 4 months of age.

The tendency is to delay diversification, prevention of food allergies.

During introductions, your pediatrician will guide you.

Between 5-6 months and 7 months

According appetite and changing the baby weight, we first add 1 to 2 tablespoons (5-10 g) infant cereals "1st age" in the bottle of milk for dinner and / or grandchild lunch. The infant cereal 1st age "are particularly suited to the baby intestine, immature before 6 months: their starch (their sugar constitution) is pre-digested, it prevents baby digestive disorders like bloating A or rice. corn, they are free of gluten, a protein whose premature consumption may weaken the bowel and promote allergies.

Between 7 months and 8 months.

Around 7-8 months baby eat cereals 1 to 2 tablespoons (5-10 g), in its bottles in the morning and evening. It can start to eat a snack, in the form of infant cereal in a bottle or even a biscuit for toddler to melting texture. Baby is now able to properly digest starch, passes cereals "age 2". Introducing the gluten, therefore wheat. It is possible to use flour conventional wheat or semolina to thicken meals. If baby eats with a spoon, for variety, 5-6 teaspoons (30 g approximately) baked potato steam .

9 months to 1 year.

Baby consumes grains, about 2 to 3 tablespoons (10 to 15 g) each of his meals. At breakfast, you can incorporate cocoa grains. The taste, as and with the arrival of his teeth, he is able to nibble the crust of bread or some crackers major: boudoirs, biscuits, cat languages. For the main meal, we introduced small pasta, vermicelli, rice (not too for constipation), tapioca.

Between 1 and 3 years.

Grain foods have their place in every meal. Their complex carbohydrates provide good satiety that prevents baby from getting hungry between meals and snacking. Between 2 and 3 years, it can be based on 20 to 30 grams of cereals or 50 to 100 g of potatoes per meal. But the quantities are to adapt to the baby's specific energy needs and to the evolution of its weight. If baby starts to become more difficult, it may taste better to accept some hard vegetables mixed with potatoes.

Conventional or infant cereals?

If we introduce grains before 6 months, infant cereals "1st age" are preferable because they are more digestible. Up to 1 year, infant cereals have the advantage of very low pesticide levels, they are more enriched with iron and vitamins. Between 6 and 7 months, when there is no infant cereals, avoid gluten: it thickens the milk bottles with rice flour or corn (cornflour ®). When replacing cereal food with potatoes, it is limited to steaming. Dauphine potatoes or fries, too fat, not suitable before 3 years.

What if my child is allergic?

sometimes waiting up to 3 years to introduce gluten. In this case, there are gluten-free diet products, pasta, breads, biscuits, partially covered by social security. Of course, we follow the advice of the pediatrician.
