Hello I hope you are doing great. In order to help you better please let us know a little bit more about your skills.

-Is this the first logo you are creating?

-Do you have experience using graphic software, if yes which one do you use?

-Are you good drawing on pen and paper?

-What type of logo are you planing to make?

I can provide you better tips if you tell at where you stand but just to begin I can tell you that a logo should be:

-Simple (to avoid distracting the attention from what matters)

-Memorable (so you engage people better)

-Timeless (should remain fresh and usable even in 10 years form now)

-Versatile (should be easy to adapt to different publications, web, graphic and video)

-Appropriate (should be related to your topic, market and clientele)

best way is to keep it simple. do not over complicate it and make it easy to remember. perhaps something funny or even disgusting, as long as its basic or visially interesting or appealing.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. It's easy to get caught up in the idea of making some fancy design with multiple colors, a drop shadow, some kind of texture, or crazy font but those are big no-no's. It has to be very simple and catchy. Look at some of the most famous companies today and their logos. See a trend? they're all very simple, usually just 2 or 3 colors with the text being 'font with meaning.' Follow that and you can create some awesome logos.
