It makes a flat color evenly shade from light to dark. Photoshop has a bank of tools and this is one of the best ones.

In image editing software, gradients are gradual changes of color or tint from one location to another. Gradients can be used to add subtle color changes to an image, such as those caused by shadow. Before you can add a gradient to an object, you'll need to select it.

Takes colors that are flat and then shifts their shade from either light to dark or dark to light. Doing a gradient with an already established pattern is always a fun feature, and Photoshop actually has quite a few options you can use. It's one of my favorite tools; always seems to add an extra flair to any project.

The Gradient tool creates a gradual blend between multiple colors, you can choose from preset gradient fills or create your own gradient tool and click and drag across an image area to create a gradient in the direction and length of the mouse motion,a short drag creates a short gradient a long drag produces a smoother, longer gradient.

A short drag creates a short gradient; a long drag produces a smoother, longer gradient. From the Options bar, you also can choose the type of gradient you want: Linear, Radial, Angle, Reflected, or Diamond. As a default, gradients are created using the current foreground and background colors.
