An index is another name for the database used by a search engine. Indexes contain the information on all the websites that Google (or any other search engine) was able to find. If a website is not in a search engine's index, users will not be able to find it.

In SEO, sitemap.xml submission to search engine for the result of website chached in search engine database for easy crawling in called as indexing. If we search our website for a particular keyword and website is in the search results the we can say that website is indexing in the search results.
