Another option for dealing with duplicate content is to utilize the rel=canonical tag. The rel=canonical tag passes the same amount of link juice (ranking power) as a 301 redirect, and often takes much less development time to implement. The tag is part of the HTML head of a web page.

Canonical tags are a powerful way to tell Google and other search engines which URLs you want them to index. It is a special designation slipped into the code of a web page to indicate that another page should be considered the origin of the information when the search engine displays the findings to the user.

Canonical tag is used to avoid the duplicate content of the webpage. It tell the search engines spider which is the right page for caching.
