The HTTP 404, 404 Not Found and 404 (pronounced "four oh four") error message is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) standard response code, in computer network communications, to indicate that the client was able to communicate with a given server, but the server could not find what was requested.

A 404 error is an HTTP status code that means that the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server.

404 Not Found error messages are frequently customized by individual websites. You can see some of the more creative ones in our 20 Best 404 Error Pages Ever slideshow. So, keep in mind that the 404 error might show up in just about any way imaginable depending on what website it's shown from.

One of the most common errors you can come across while browsing the Internet is a 404 or Page Not Found error. This error often occurs when you follow a broken link or if you type in a website address that doesn’t exist.

The 404 Error Page, known as "page not found," is an HTTP[S] standardized status code that indicates an established connection with the server but an inability to find the page in question. Excessive 404 errors negatively impact a website's SEO and are lost revenue opportunities when the user does not ultimately navigate to the website.

You know the page: you click on a link, but instead of getting the site you want, an error pops up indicating that the requested page is not available. Something along the lines of '404 Not Found'. A 404 error is the standardized HTTP status code. The message is sent from the webserver of an online presence, to the web browser (usually the client) that sent the HTTP request. The browser then displays this error code.

A 404 error is an HTTP status code that means that the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server. The 404 Not Found error might appear for several reasons even though no real issue exists, so sometimes a simple refresh will often load the page you were looking for. The most common method is to retry the web page by pressing F5, clicking the refresh/reload button, or trying the URL from the address bar again.
