Define your keywords
Provide as much good, interesting and useful content as you can.
make sure your website has no broken links and have proper use of h1, h2 tags, and alt tags for images if any.
Create sitemap html & xml and submit it in google webmaster tools.
Then Start building backlinks by posting articles, forums, commenting and submitting your websites in Search engines.
These are some basic steps to start SEO. To keep updating you have to do regular research on this topic and learn techniques
