Why not?? You can definitely do SEO yourself, if you have proper knowledge and time. Otherwise you can easily get the best SEO services provide company or SEO expert.

Unless you want to spend A LOT of time learning SEO, tweaking your approach, analyzing the results, tweaking some more...(repeat, repeat, repeat) - then you might want to have someone else do it for you. Good SEO takes a long time.

Be very cautious in picking an SEO company. They can make or break your business. A lot of SEO companies I have interacted, struggle to have their names come up in SERPs. I doubt as to how they can help me out. If you speak to them and ask them what activities they would follow, you would know if you can trust them or not. A lot of them do black or gray hat techniques, that would not be useful in the long run. Do good analysis and ask them to help you speak to their customers.

I think you should learn SEO yourself so that way you can learn different strategies that would best fit your site/business. Yes, doing it yourself may take longer but it will be more rewarding when you see your work paying off and your site moving up in the ranking.

Also just as TrendJewelry said, be VERY CAREFUL when choosing a SEO company to work with. Sometimes it's hard to understand what exactly these companies are doing to your site and they may be more willing to make risky decisions since it's not their site and their clients expect quick results.

If you decide to pay someone, expect to PAY A LOT. Just as andrewc has stated, expect to pay at least $1,000 a month for very basic SEO. Stay away from people who offer thousands of backlinks for a few bucks, it will destroy your rankings in today's penguin and panda era. You just cant fool Google with crappy content, well some can, but never for very long.
