Google cars :From now Google Autonomous Cars know when we honk

A big step forward! Google has taken another step to integrate its cars in our daily landscape. Google's Autonomous Cars are now able to honk wisely and produce sounds to warn other road users.

In the words of Pierre Desproges, "a gentleman is a man who can play the bagpipes but does not." Just live or walk a few hours in a city where the car is not banished to know that there are quite a few gentlemen driving. Untimely honking give a pretty good idea that motorists do not know his other name: the buzzer. In other words, they honk to warn of danger, for example, but not to try to move the car being stuck in front of you. The use of the horn is far from being controlled by humans and yet, Google has announced that its autonomous cars arrived there.

Honk while remaining polite

In its report of May, Google explains how its engineers have "developed a voice for autonomous cars" or how they have their "learned to honk" wisely means.

Assuming, defined by a certain Eugene Garfield, the horn is an instrument of torture. And if the fact of "honk for a human can be considered an art, [the Google Car] must be polished, measured and honk only when it makes driving safer all."

For if the decision honking is not always easy to take for a human, imagine all that a car needs to learn. Thus, Google Cars had to learn to tell the difference between a real threat and a false danger, for example distinguish a car that runs against the grain of a car positioned against the grain as it did a half turn. Similarly, the Google cars without driver had to learn to dose their honking. If a car makes a slow backwards in their direction and comes dangerously close, it will issue two small tut tut friendly to warn motorists. However, in a more dangerous or emergency situation, the honk will be longer and stronger.

Ultimately, the goal of Google engineers is how to ensure that their car "honking as a patient and experienced driver." They hope also well push further the limits of the control horn. "By gaining experience as klaxonneur, we hope that our cars will be able to predict how other drivers react to sounds in different situations," explains the monthly report.

Different sounds

Because Google's teams have installed various types of alarms. We are not talking here of a mistake Oh Susanna, but the ability to play different classic sounds kept silent kept silent in a kind of buzz that would enable pedestrians and cyclists to hear these autonomous and electric cars, so quietest in certain situations on the road. Google cars started to travel across the "honking" timidly in the vehicle, for the driver to oversee the conduct known whether the horn was used at the right time and for good reason. Now they do it outdoors and confident. But Google has worked on the sound identity of these sounds to match the idea that people have of his cars: "friendly and somewhat futuristic." A whole program ... sound.
