Facebook launches intelligent automatic description for the visually impaired

Facebook wasted no time. Less than a week after the submission of the application SeeingAI Microsoft. The company Marck Zuckerberg unveiled its own intelligent assistance system for the blind called Automatic Alternative Text.

In the video presentation is a synthetic voice that explains the operation of the tool by going directly to the blind: "Wondering what Facebook looks like? Turn it up and go. " The new technology of Facebook is able to depict the content of photos, describing its different elements. This is basically an automatic system for generating photographic legends.

The social network is continuing its technological advances in image recognition. Deepface its facial recognition system that allowed automatically tagg friends in photos had already hit the headlines, as the algorithm was effective.

Always anxious to expand a little more its user base (which has surpassed the one billion daily users in 2015), Facebook is not ready to let go of a market of over 300 million users . Facebook believes in fact to 246 million visually impaired and 39 million are blind. With more than 2 billion photos shared every day on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, the firm would not deprive the visually impaired this huge database.

Rather than rest on his colleagues and relatives to "interpret the pictures" instead of the visually impaired, the engineers of Team Accessibility Facebook suggest algorithmically generate accurate and useful descriptions without being too penalizing latency issues.

After ten months of data analysis, design prototypes and user behavior studies (an example here), that Image Alternative Text. The social network announced the extent of the challenge he had proposed to raise, like finding the balance between amount of information and accuracy. The desire for information is very subjective, some seek first to know who is in the photo, while others are interested in the background, the landscape. A feat made possible by the technology of object recognition developed by the firm, which operates from a neural network composed of billions of parameters and digested with millions of examples to mature.

But the project goes well beyond that. Through his research on visual interaction of the visually impaired, the group seeks above all to develop new features to simplify and improve the general interactivity on its social network. Making a more intuitive and easy to use as possible, it is the sinews of war between application developers.

The technology is now available in English on the iOS version, but Facebook already plans to deploy the international device.
