Yes very much effective because your each post is indexed by google and your backlink also getting increased..As the traffic increases your website PR gets high..

According to my knowledge, when we go for forum discussion, we need to create a good profile on it. We can also add a signature link on it. And we need to do good discussion on it. When people visit your website, then through this way, your visitors will increase also helps with website promotions.
