most of the time i use on page seo.
then go for off page seo compaign . starting from froum posting , blog posting, social media bookmarking, video sharing etc.

the first step is definitely on page, make sure the content and layout are search engine friendly, then as dean said, go into off page techniques like the ones he mentioned and as well article submission and blog commenting

you must start with On page optimization, then code optimization, then using the most of google webmasters tools and then work on backlinks as our friends said : blogging, forums, social networking and so on...

You can start first seo offpage optimization. Article submission, social bookmarking, blog posting,forum posting, directory submission is good for backlink and social networking like facebook, twitter shear, like is best increasing more traffic.

In client site, compare to traffic we need Rank in first page. For that Rank purpose first strong with onpage work like meta tag, Title of this page, Unique Description. Then move to offpage work like Quality work, forum posting, guest blogging,Social Bookmarking with do follow sites.
