Well, it’s a mechanism that HTTP provides for web cache validation – specifically it allows for a client to make a request that is conditional on whether the content it’s requesting from the server has changed or not. If it hasn’t changed, then this allows the resource to be fetched from cache more efficiently, saving bandwidth.

An entity tag (ETag) is an HTTP header used for Web cache validation and conditional requests from browsers for resources. It uses persistent identification elements (PIE) that have been tagged to the user’s browser. Although a user may remove HTTP cookies, it stores the same information along with covert backup to reconstitute the data of deleted cookies.
