What are some on page things I can do to make an article rank high?
What can I do to improve my articles to make it high rank?

Make sure it fulfills the criteria for a good article (fresh content, good grammar, etc.) an then submit it to article submission sites like Ezine Articles.

Just one more thing I found. Make sure google sees a clear theme in your article.
