I don't actively pursue "likes" but maybe I should. I'm curious if down the road it will make a difference.

Likes is different from backlinks, likes only shows how people react to the page. so basically it does not affect the page itself.

Backlinks are all links that point to a page, including those from other pages within the site.

I think backlinks are more important than likes in the ranking and likes helps but little bit.

Backlinks are the best than likes. Back links play a very important role to generate web traffics, increase visitors, to get position on search result, to get or increase web page rank etc.

Backlink is important for promoting website and get quality back link. With increasing traffic, backlink will also increase. Link building is the best method for this purpose.
