Allergic rhinitis: how to prevent it? How to treat it?

Diagnose the causes of rhinitis

The hay fever that you are experiencing for years is not inevitable, do not hesitate to talk to your doctor. He will first seek to eliminate another cause of rhinitis and runny nose by performing a detailed examination of your throat and nose and he will also look for signs of allergy that may be located elsewhere in your body (Eczema, asthma, ...). A thorough interview will help you assess your history: have you had any other signs of allergy, your parents or grandparents are allergic, etc.?

Finally, he may be led to offer you tests carried out by an allergist within the framework of an allergic check to find out what precisely are the substances that trigger these symptoms.

How to treat allergic rhinitis?

PREVENTIVE TREATMENT OF SEASONAL RHINITIES

In case of seasonal allergic rhinitis, a preventive treatment with antihistamines may be prescribed to you: often such treatment will completely avoid the onset of symptoms, and in any case it will decrease them significantly. It must be started at the beginning of the period during which your hay fever usually occurs.

PREVENTIVE TREATMENT OF PERI-ANNUAL RHINITIES

For perennial rhinitis, it is imperative to take care of the environment: avoid the carpet, treat all the textile elements with acaricides in the rooms and use covers treated in case of allergy to mites. Avoid animals, and at least prohibit them from entering the rooms. Depending on the nature of the allergen, take appropriate measures to reduce contact and inhalation. The use of a pollen filter in the car can also reduce exposure to the allergen.

DRUG TREATMENTS

Regardless of the type of allergic rhinitis, symptomatic drug therapy involves antihistamine cures or nasal spray corticosteroids associated or not. Desensitization - now predominantly prescribed sublingually - is the only treatment that permanently affects the cause of allergy, allowing a favorable change in the course of the disease.

Of course, the first thing is to avoid as much as possible contact with the substance or substances responsible for your allergic rhinitis ... Not always simple!

Identify signs

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis are well known to those who suffer from this disease. A nose that begins to flow permanently, with a clear flow like water (one speaks of watery rhinorrhea) and which obliges to fill its pockets of handkerchiefs. Often, there are also signs in the eyes: tears, tingling, itching, feeling of having the eyelids irritated and swollen.

A sensation of having clogged ears is also often associated with the thickening of the wall of the eustachian tubes, these small channels which go from the throat to the middle ear and which have the role of balancing the pressure Between the inside and the outside of the eardrum.

The repetition of these irritations ended up having an effect on the walls of the nose, which they make more fragile and more susceptible to infections.

30% of the affected population are adults

Often overlooked by patients who do not consider themselves to be truly ill, allergic rhinitis is a reaction of the walls of the nose to the presence of an external substance capable of triggering an allergy reaction. This substance (called an allergen) causes a response of certain immune cells that automatically produce too much antibody (type E or IgE immunoglobulin) in the nasal mucosa, that is, the lining of the nasal mucosa nose. This production is also accompanied by dilation of the blood vessels and the local emission of irritating substances. As this reaction takes place locally throughout the ENT area, it is the nose but also all the organs connected to it that will be affected: the back of the throat, the middle ear and the eyes.

30% of the population has an allergic rhinitis every year, testifying in people with an allergic predisposition or sensitization to certain allergens.

Pollen, dust and animals: first guilty

In many cases, it is the pollen that triggers these seizures: these are then seasonal allergic rhinitis, or "hay fever". Indeed, pollens are mostly present according to the regions between February and September. All pollens are not allergenic: to possess this characteristic, they must contain proteins that will be recognized by the allergic person and trigger a reaction ... and the presence of this type of protein can vary considerably from one region To the other, including pollens of the same kind of trees !!

On the other hand, allergenic pollens are only those which are disseminated by the wind and which can therefore be breathed by allergic persons: those that are disseminated by the insects are not sources of hay fever crises. Among the plants that give the most allergenic pollen are grasses (prairie grasses), mugwort, ambrosia and nettle, cypresses, birches, oaks and plane trees.

When the allergenic product is permanently present in the environment, the symptoms are present throughout the year, and this is called perennial allergic rhinitis. This is mainly due to "domestic" elements: pet hair, feathers; House dust (including the famous mites), cockroaches, etc.
