UNIX systems actually use Linux but for comparison purposes they are identical.Windows hosting results in being a more expensive platform.

Both Linux and Windows platforms can run popular programming languages such as php, perl, or java. If your website uses active server pages, then it will be less risky hosting it on a Windows server. Well it still may function on a Unix server, there may be small glitches that are not immediately apparent. Similarly, if you are using with Microsoft SQL databases, these databases will be supported by most Windows plans. However, Linux or Unix plans often include MySQL which would require that your databases be converted to this format in order to function properly. If you are currently using any Microsoft programming (especially active server pages) or third-party applications (MS SQL 2000), you may want to play it safe and choose a Windows hosting plan.

They are two different OS system hosted on two different platforms. Unix are offered on OpenVZ whereas Windows are hosted on Xen platforms. Unix offers more security to your server and hosting compared to Windows, but Windows are easier to operate and use with less troubleshooting.

What is the difference between Unix and Windows shared hosting services?

Potential website hosts often make you choose either UNIX or Windows Web hosting. The host operating system should be chosen based upon the language in which your website is written as well as which database is used. Using the Windows hosting option allows ease in producing and publishing Active Server Pages (.asp) and Visual Basic Script files. Also inherent to Windows is Silverlight, Frontpage and Server Side Includes (SSI). UNIX web hosting allows ease in producing PHP, Perl and CGI files. Java runs well with both hosting options. The Windows hosting option is an excellent choice for a website that runs either MS SQL or MS Access databases. The UNIX option is an excellent operating system for MYSQL databases.

Difference between Unix and Windows shared hosting services?

Hey,
Unix web hosting and Windows web hosting are comparable, as both of them allow you to put a website online with almost no effort at all. Yet, there are some main differences between the two. The decision to choose one web hosting platform over another is usually determined by what type of developing languages you use.

Network Solutions offers two main types of operating system platforms on which you may host your Web site: Unix and Windows. ... UNIX-based hosting is generally seen as being more stable, it also performs faster and can be more secure since most malicious software is written to cause damage to Windows.

Most web hosting companies use either one of two operating systems on their servers. Those two are Windows and Linux. What is the difference between the two and how do they effect your web hosting?

Linux is one of the most prevalent operating systems for web hosting, because it is inexpensive and fairly easy to install. Windows is the other choice because they have world class support. However there are a lot of similarities and a lot of differences in how the two operate. There is also a difference in security between the two, and many times Windows becomes the target of spyware because of these vulnerabilities.
