Does SSL certificate help to be ranked by Google? Do I need to buy it at all?

Its only a ranking signal but not within the ranking metrics of Google. SSL usually used by websites which has confidential transactions to protect with.

Google made having an SSL Certificate a ranking factor for websites looking to rank for keywords in Google search engine results. Google crawlers have been designed to index a site with the SSL certificate and favor websites using HTTPS.

SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization's details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol (over port 443) and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser.

It really depends on the server you are using. Different servers have different steps to install a SSL certificate.
Typically you would:
Step 1: Generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) from your server to submit it to the Certificate Authority (CA). The CSR contains a public key, that matches with a private key stored remotely in your server.
Step 2: After going through the validation with a CA, you will be issued a SSL certificate
Step 3: Install this SSL certificate based on your server requirements, which you can find instructions from your CA or simply do a search for instructions

Thank you I do understand it now. Just one more quick question: two identical websites, but one of them has SSL certificate, will it be ranked higher because of that?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral.
There will be ranked higher because of that?
