A broken link is a link that doesn't work, often resulting in an error page. A broken link happens when the link points to a web page that has been deleted or moved.

A broken link is a link on a web page that no longer works because the website is encountering one or more of the below reasons.
1. An improper URL entered for the link by the web site owner.
2. The destination web site removed the linked web page (causing what is known as a 404 error).
3. The destination web site permanently moved or no longer exists.
4. The user has software or is behind a firewall that blocks access to the destination web site.
5. The website owner linked to a site that is behind a firewall that does not allow outside access.

A broken link is nothing but 404 error, any link in your website which lead to 404 errors is know as broken links. Its always bad if you have many broken links in your website, it may have negative impact on the visitor who are visiting and may not visit your webpage again, try reducing your broken links errors by redirecting your user to a well design 404 errors page and allow your users to navigate back to important pages of your page and also provide a small search option in your 404 error pages.

Broken or dead link, a link that, having suffered link rot, points to a webpage or server that is no longer available on the World Wide Web. When a broken link is selected in a Web document, an error message appears on the screen. To find broken links on your website you need to use a link checker. There are various ones available, but we’ll explain the free W3C Link Checker.

Broken links are the links which are no longer working, these links usually lead to 404 page.
These links are mainly caused after the page has been deleted or the links are changed by intentionally.

Post Re:

Basically Broken links are links that lead to pages that do not exist. When clicking on a broken link, the page you land on is called a 404 error page, a standard HTTP response that indicates that the requested URL does not exist.
