What is GEO TAG in SEO?
I heard about something like "<meta name="geo.placename" ", what is it actually, and what is the effect of this tag, is it beneficial in SEO? Please share your views.

Geo tagging means tag your location data with image, video or any thing else. It will improve your chances appearing in search if it based on particular place. It is good for traveling blog or website, tourism website etc.

Tags are some of those things that can't hurt but probably don't help anymore. You might even get an over-optimization penalty if you get it all right, Google doesn't want anything but content(and links) determining where a page ranks.
As for that article and language - Google has already stated that they don't even trust the lang tag anymore since it's set wrong on a lot of sites because of default template settings, they test for language on their own.

Geotagging or geocoding is a way to add geographical meta data to photos, RSS feeds, and websites. A geotag can define the longitude and latitude of the tagged item. Or it can define the location place name or regional identifier. It can also include information such as the altitude and bearing.
