How to Do Keyword Research for SEO: A Beginner's Guide
Step 1: Make a list of important, relevant topics based on what you know about your business.
Step 2: Fill in those topic buckets with keywords.
Step 3: Research related search terms.
Step 4: Check for a mix of head terms and long-tail keywords in each bucket.
Step 5: See how competitors are ranking for these keywords.
Step 6: Use the Google AdWords Keyword Planner (or HubSpot's Keywords App) to cut down your keyword list.

No doubt best keyword research tool is Google Keyword Planner, but apart from this there are various other sources for keyword research as well like SEM Rush, Google Analytic, Google Webmaster Tool.

You can also take help of Google auto complete and Google suggestion. It is the best way to know most frequently used keyword.

I use Moz Pro for keyword planning and keeping track of my ranking of all keywords. It costs a bit, but absolutely worth it if you are serious about SEO.

Keywords, and their search volumes, tell you a few things:

What your audience’s main problems are – if 5,000 people are searching for a particular keyword, it shows that it’s a common and important problem in your niche. Create your content around the most popular problems.
The language they use – people describe problems in different ways. If you can understand which words your reader uses to describe problems, you can write more compelling content.
Which topics are becoming more important or less important over time – as niches evolve, keywords gain and lose popularity. Good keyword research will help you identify which searches are becoming more common so that you can create more content around those.
