to get keywords on first page, it depends on the keyword, if it is competitive then your website will not attain first page position for targeted keywords, if it is less competitive then it is possible.

i agree you have to do keyword research,and build quality back links on relevant pages. this will help you rank on the first page of google but you must be diligent and consistant or you wont see any results also seo is very important when it comes to ranking.

Focus on low competition keyword on which you can rank easily.IF your blog is more than 3 years old than you can target the high competition keywords.

It depends on how much competition is withing your keyword, you can analyse competition by online tools, such as adwords, or even by your experience, if your keyword has no competition you site can be on first page just by doing minor seo, else for very high competitive keywords it may take years of effort.
