There are usually two types of redirects. Permanent (301) and temporary (302).

If you want to redirect one URL to another (for instance changing the domain name for your site) you need to use the 301 option.

If you need to temporarily redirect a certain URL for a small time frame and the URL is going to be live again in the future do a 302 redirect.
