Apple: a new file system encrypted by nature

Apple unveils new home file system that is expected to succeed HFS +, the current file system used by Apple's OS. This new APFS file system is currently not available, Apple plans to introduce from 2017.

This ad has been ignored during the opening conference, but that passes easily unnoticed. Apple seems indeed want to get rid of the current file system used on OSX / MacOS HFS +, in favor of a new home file system called APFS. The first details have been published on the website developer and a presentation conference is scheduled for tomorrow so we may know a little more in the coming days about Apple's new file system.

But the documentation circulated online already outlines what should enable this new file system, whose deployment was announced for 2017.Apple intends to offer this new file system for MacOS, but also for iOS and WatchOS TVOS, for the sake of consistency.

At Apple, this figure greatly

Among the new features of this file system include some of Apple's obsessions. So APFS natively manage file encryption via AES encryption algorithm. It will therefore no longer necessary to go through Filevault to encrypt a file and this feature will be directly accessible from the OS.

In its documentation, Apple highlights the new features in the file system: it will be well optimized for flash drives and SS, with support of traditional hard drives. SATF also introduce features space sharing. This feature allows multiple users to share the same volume of physical storage. This will make it possible to have two volumes on one disc and let them share physical storage space automatically.

SATF also introduced the cloning and snapshots: a snapshot of a file is a copy only accessible in read without writing ability. Apple plans this feature as a tool to facilitate the creation of backups and restore points. A cloned file is instead a copy for write access, but only the changes are actually recorded on the disk and the file is not fully replicated to conserve storage space.
Trillions of files!

APFS has an indexing files in 64-bit, allowing him to manage up to 9 trillion (10 ^ 18) files on a single volume by Apple. The manufacturer also promises better performance and responsiveness with the granularity of timestamp, which changes from one second to HFS + for a nanosecond APFS. This new file system introduces support for trim controls that allow an operating system to optimize disk access on the SSD.

An important aspect therefore, yet ignored during the inaugural conference. Can be further proof if any were needed, that it is for customers rather than to the developers of the Apple ecosystem. For interesting information, it is better to turn to the workshops that are taking place in the premises of the WWDC. APFS has to be presented tomorrow. And not surprisingly, Apple has already announced that its file system planned for 2017 would also be available in open source.
