Alexa is a website which provides the ranking for all websites, the ranking provided by alexa is based on your ranking and traffic. If you have lots of traffic your website alexa ranking will be low and vice versa.

So to increase alexa rank you need to install alexa toolbar on your system and try to open your website by using this.

In my view Alexa rank is user trust rank. if user stay in your site then Alexa rank decrease and if user not stay in your site then Alexa rank increase

I personally think that you should be conscious about backlink's quality rather then quantity because after google penguin update it is more strict then before that your links should be high quality as well as relevant.
