Most common method people use off page.
DS BM AS BP etc these are followed by most of seo.

At my point of view,Directory submission and social bookmarking both techniques are used as common techniques in search engine optimization.

-social networking -blogging -blog marketing -forum participation -search engine submission -directory submission -article submission -social bookmarking -link baiting -photo sharing & video marketing There are numerous more techniques but the above mentioned are widely practiced globally.
