Canonical tags are used to declare a single page as its own source or for duplicate pages to reference their source page. Search Engines use the canonical tag to combat duplicate content issues and assign search engine ranking value for that content to the page designated as the source URL.

A canonical tag specifies the source URL (or original content page) of a given page to a search engine such as Google. Duplicate content is a big no-no to search engines. Having pages of identical or very similar content on your website is seen as a negative, and may be used by Google to devalue your website when determining rankings.

Canonical Tag is used to tell Google that the content of the page is being copied from the other page of the same or other website. Canonical tag is used to secure your website from getting penalized by Google penalties.
For Example:- If you are copying the content of Page a in Page B, then in page B canonical tag will be used giving reference to page A. |

A canonical link element is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues by specifying the "canonical" version of a web page as part of search engine optimization.

Rel=canonical is a tag that helps you to eliminate full or partial doubles of content, and also to protect content from duplication on resources which partially or completely can cache the website (for example, web archives).
This tag will be useful for: - Pagination pages - Pages with UTM tags - Filtration pages - Duplication of content on different domains

A canonical tag is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs. Practically speaking, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in search results.
