In simple words, pinging is the processes of letting the search engines know that there was a recent update on your website. The main goal is to increase the probability of your website getting indexed by Google, Yahoo, Bing and the likes. So yes, it is important for SEO benefits.

"pinging" is basically an automatic notification to a search engine (not Google.com!) that a page has been updated and it should be recrawled. Specifically, this is relevant for social properties like blogs, forums and other web 2.0 sites that are indexed by several search engines that keep a record of the page and the date.

Pinging will help search engines find your website much faster. So regular pinging gives you a great advantage over the sites with fewer activities and lesser pings.When your website gets indexed by the search engines due to regular pinging, it will automatically help drive more traffic to your website.

It is also called ping submission activity in which you can ping to other site so if any updates are in your web site then you can index your web site.

The service is basically used after having some updates on website so that the bots visit the webpage to check the updates and get them added to their data. But as bots are getting too clever and sharp, it is better to not to use such services anymore.

Pinging represents delivering auto-generated notices to robots letting them know that the page has been modified and needs to be re-crawled. In SEO, pinging means to tell google about your recently designed back-links so that they are indexed and are mentioned.
