Another option for dealing with duplicate content is to utilize the rel=canonical tag. The rel=canonical tag passes the same amount of link juice (ranking power) as a 301 redirect, and often takes much less development time to implement.

Canonical tag is used to deal with duplicate content or web page issues. It is used to define the canonical url or the preferred webpage when you have more than one page serving same information to the user.
It is good to use canonical tag when you have multiple similar or duplicate pages so that search engine can easily recognize the root page and which page to prefer for crawling and indexing. It saves your website from being penalized.
