4 tips to install your security camera for outdoor use

Installing a security camera yourself on the outside of your home is child's play. Do take some legal and technical aspects into account: our tips.
You have decided to install a bullet cctv cameras outside. How do you handle the installation? You absolutely do not need to get a professional, because you can easily install such a camera yourself. The only thing to watch out for is that you comply with some legal and technical regulations.

1. What does the law say about installing a camera?

In the past, you had to report every security camera that you installed to the Privacy Commission . From 25 May 2018 onwards, this declaration no longer has to be in accordance with the amended camera legislation. If you place a camera, you must register it with the police services. This can be done via a new e-counter. This obligation only applies to cameras that you install outside, not for indoor cameras.

Please note : if you have indicated a security camera in the past via the old e-counter of the Privacy Commission, you must ensure that you are in order with the new legislation by 25 May 2020 at the latest.
Good to know : the owner of a camera that is placed outdoors must keep a register with the activities of the camera and make it available on request to the Data Protection Authority (from 25 May 2018 the new name of the Privacy Commission) and the police services. . The future royal decree will determine which data that register must contain and how long the register must be kept.

As far as the use is concerned, you can only film your property with the camera. So do not point the camera at the public road or the garden of your neighbor. And if the camera still shows (partially) a publicly accessible place, the recordings of those images must be kept to the strict minimum.
It is also forbidden to conceal your camera. That is the case if the filmed person has not given his permission in advance. The solution is to place an icon that draws attention to your camera.

It is forbidden to conceal your security camera, unless you place an icon that draws attention to the camera. After all, the law assumes that someone who sees the icon and continues, actually gives his permission to be filmed. Incidentally, if someone places a surveillance camera in accordance with the provisions of the camera law, but uses the camera for other purposes that are regulated by other laws, then the camera law prevails if the various provisions are irreconcilable with each other.
2. Where to install your camera?

To protect your home against unwanted visitors , point the camera at one of the access points (driveway, front or back door, windows, garage, ...).
Install the camera preferably 2 to 3 meters above the ground: at that height it is not too easily accessible, while you still get a good picture of the face of your "visitors". On the other hand, the camera should not catch too much eye on someone coming into your field. Ideally, you can tilt the camera slightly, so that visitors are filmed from the side rather than frontally.
To avoid glare from the sun as much as possible, point the camera at a point below the horizon. An angle of about 30 degrees should give the best picture.

3. What about the storage of the images?

Some cameras keep the images in the cloud, others on a memory card. Both systems have their specific advantages and disadvantages.
The cloud offers you the possibility to save video on a secure server. You only have access to the images, but often you have to pay for this storage. If, on the other hand, you use an SD card, you do not need an internet connection. Even if the Wi-Fi would drop out, the camera will still pick up. Moreover, you are not dependent on a server that is set up somewhere. But if the memory on the card is at risk, the camera automatically deletes the oldest recorded file.

4. And the power supply?

Some outdoor security cameras only operate on the mains power of your home, while others take their energy out of a battery. Power supply offers the advantage that your camera can not fall without power in principle. A battery lasts about a year on average. The latter system is practical if there is no power line in the area and a power cut. Some cameras even have a battery that is rechargeable with solar energy.
So, now you have all the information to install your security camera for outdoor use.
