A broken link or dead link is a link on a web page that no longer works because the website is encountering one or more of the below reasons.

An improper URL entered for the link by the web site owner.
The destination web site removed the linked web page (causing what is known as a 404 error)
The destination web site permanently moved or no longer exists
The user has software or is behind a firewall that blocks access to the destination web site.
The web site owner linked to a site that is behind a firewall that does not allow outside access (such as an Intranet site or a restricted access area on a web site).

Broken links are bad for SEO.
It could be also because of capitalization error in Linux servers.

A link with an error is called broken links.
when you create any backlink for your website than always keep in mind that you enter the correct target url, some times any spelling mistake or any missing character in url causes your link to not work when any user click on it. Always check before submitting any link otherwise you'll not get the benefit of that link because it is not pointing to your website.
