Meta Tag helps the search engine to know what your site is about. When returning search engine queries meta tags are first ones to be scanned by search engines.

Meta tags are like standard for search engine so they dont need to look inside your webpage . before 2009 Metatags was important factor for Website listing in all search engine but after Booming of SEO field and wrong listing and poor Search Engine performance ALl search engine dont consider Meta tags for there Listing

There are various types of meta tags and each serves a different purpose. For example -

1) Meta description tag serves the purpose of displaying the description of the site below title in SERPs.

2) The meta author tag credits the author of the page.

3) Meta keywords tag (which Search engines no longer support there days) was meant to display the keywords related to page content, etc.
