Canonical URL allows you to tell search engines that certain similar URLs are actually one and the same. Sometimes you have products or content that are under multiple URLs, or even on multiple websites. Using a canonical URL (an HTML link tag with attribute rel=canonical) these can exist without harming your rankings.

The search engine friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as authoritative. In other words, a canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see.

Quite often canonical URLs were used to describe the homepage. The typical example
www.example.com
example.com
www.example.com/index.html
example.com/home.asp

A canonical URL is the search engine-friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as the most authoritative URL for that web page content. It is also the URL you want people to see in the search results.

Canonical URL is an important term that every blogger should be aware of. Even if you have heard or not, you should know what role Canonical URL plays in the optimization of a website. I have referred to it multiple times in my previous articles.
